NDF choppers deliver relief to flood-stricken communities

The Namibian Defence Force (NDF) has launched a coordinated humanitarian relief operation to assist communities affected by severe flooding across the northern regions of the country.

The operation, which began on 31 March, covers the Ohangwena, Oshana, Omusati and Kunene regions, where torrential rains have left several areas inaccessible by road.

The campaign involves the deployment of NDF helicopters, vehicles and personnel to transport healthcare workers, distribute food parcels, and relocate flood victims to higher ground.

Wing Commander Eliaser Ambambi, who heads the operation, said that providing such support to civil authorities and communities falls within the NDF’s official duties.

“Airlifting health professionals, assisting councillors in delivering food aid, and relocating flood victims to higher ground are all part of our mandate. Most of the areas where we operate are cut off by water, whereby normal routes are inaccessible. The timeframe of the operation will be determined by the water levels,” he said.

Ambambi added that flood-affected communities have welcomed the assistance, with many residents expressing appreciation for the availability of healthcare services during a time when waterborne diseases become more prevalent.

He also said that the relocation of vulnerable individuals from flooded homesteads to dry areas has also helped prevent further distress among rural populations.

“Our communities are very grateful. Without this operation, many of us would still be stranded without food or medical attention,” said a councillor from one of the affected areas.

While the operation’s end date remains uncertain due to the unpredictable water levels, the NDF continues to monitor conditions on the ground.

“We will remain in the field as long as our presence is required,” Ambambi said.

The ongoing efforts form part of a growing pattern of civil-military cooperation, with the NDF increasingly playing a role in addressing climate-driven emergencies.

More recently, the NDF’s helicopters were used to airlift equipment to Etosha National Park aimed at improving conservation management and anti-poaching operations in remote areas.

As Namibia continues to face the twin challenges of drought and flood in different parts of the country, the NDF’s readiness and logistical capacity remain key components of the national response strategy.
