NamPower’s N$394m substation to strengthen Erongo power supply

The inauguration of NamPower’s N$394 million Sekelduin Substation marks a major investment in Namibia’s electricity infrastructure that will improve power reliability in the Erongo region while supporting economic growth, industrialisation and future energy projects, deputy minister of industries, mines and energy Gaudentia Kröhne has said.

Speaking at the inauguration ceremony in Swakopmund, Kröhne said the new substation represents more than the completion of an infrastructure project, describing it as a strategic investment aimed at strengthening the country’s energy security and supporting long-term economic development.

She said the project will improve the reliability of electricity supply to Swakopmund and surrounding areas, provide additional capacity to meet growing demand from households, businesses, mining operations and the tourism sector, and reduce the risk of power interruptions.

“In simple terms, this substation will ensure that the lights stay on, businesses continue to operate, and investors have confidence in Namibia’s energy future,” she said.

Kröhne said reliable electricity remains essential for economic growth, industrial development, healthcare, education and job creation, noting that demand for electricity continues to increase as Namibia’s economy expands.

She said the investment supports the objectives of the Sixth National Development Plan (NDP6), which identifies energy infrastructure as a key enabler of economic transformation, industrialisation and inclusive growth.

According to Kröhne, the project also demonstrates the government’s commitment to strengthening the country’s bulk electricity network and supporting Regional Electricity Distributors such as Erongo RED.

She said a stronger national transmission grid would improve Namibia’s energy security, facilitate the integration of new electricity generation projects and support the expansion of renewable energy.

Kröhne added that the investment aligns with the ministry of industries, mines and energy’s strategic priorities of accelerating infrastructure development, advancing low-carbon energy solutions and expanding sustainable access to electricity.

She noted that Namibia is attracting growing investment in sectors including oil and gas, renewable energy, green hydrogen, mining and industrial development, all of which require a reliable electricity network.

“The project lays the groundwork for future investments and ensures that Namibia is ready to seize emerging opportunities in the energy and industrial sectors,” she said.

Beyond its economic impact, Kröhne said reliable electricity improves livelihoods by supporting small businesses, strengthening service delivery in schools and hospitals, and creating opportunities for communities to participate in economic development.

She commended NamPower, Erongo RED, contractors, engineers and project partners for successfully delivering the substation and reaffirmed the government’s commitment to expanding access to reliable, affordable and sustainable electricity across Namibia.
