Mobile Telecommunications (MTC), in partnership with the Namibia Rugby Union (NRU), has launched a Senior Men’s Regional Rugby Tournament, set to begin in February 2025.

The announcement was made during a launch event in Windhoek on Wednesday.

Speaking at the event, MTC’s Chief Human Capital, Marketing, and Corporate Affairs Officer, Tim Ekandjo, highlighted the tournament’s role in enhancing the competitiveness of Namibian rugby and providing crucial preparation ahead of the 2027 Rugby World Cup in Australia.

‘’Our philosophy at MTC is about nurturing sport towards development. NRU and Rugby have consistently over the years shown resilience and determination by qualifying for consecutive World Cup appearances, and as a national entity our moral fibre was inclined to naturally support the NRU towards their cause of developing rugby and placing Namibia on the world map as they have consistently done in the past,’’ said Ekandjo.

The NRU’s Vice President, Christian Windvogel expressed excitement over the partnership with MTC, describing it as a testament to MTC’s unwavering commitment to rugby development in Namibia.

“The highly anticipated Senior Men’s Regional 15s Competition is scheduled to kick off on Saturday, 22 February 2025, with additional fixtures set for 1 March and 8 March 2025. The tournament will showcase the best of Namibian rugby talent, featuring three senior regional teams alongside a fourth team of Under-20 players, offering a unique blend of experience and youth in every match,’’ said Windvogel.

He added that the competition would serve as a critical preparatory platform for Namibia’s participation in the Africa Cup Rugby World Cup Qualifiers, set to take place in Uganda in July 2025.
