The Electoral Commission of Namibia has announced that preparations are being made for the upcoming by-elections for the Moses //Garoëb Constituency in the Khomas Region scheduled for 6 January 2023.
The Supplementary Registration of Voters (SRV) will start on 31 October until 2nd of November.
The by-election is to fill the vacancy following the death of councillor Aili Venyona on 9 October.
The purpose of an SRV before holding of an election is to include in the voters’ register persons who have since turned 18 years of age after the last registration and those who have moved from one constituency to another.
It is also to attend to those whose voter registration cards have been lost or damaged or any other applicant who qualifies for registration in terms of section 22(1) of the Electoral Act.
The ECN held stakeholder engagements with political Party Liaison Committees (PLC) on Friday to discuss the provisional schedule for the Moses //Garoëb Constituency by-election in preparation for the electoral activities over the next three months.
On the recruitment and training of registration officials and logistical preparations. The ECN has recruited a total number of 90 registration officials for this process.
Training of the registration officials will take place from 24th-28th October at the Assemblies of God Church in Soweto.
The Electoral Act provides for the training of election officials, in order to equip registration and election officials with the requisite skills in preparation for the execution of their duties. Sensitive registration materials for the SRV process will be dispatched on 30th October under
strict security escort of the Namibian police to the registration venues. The election teams will be deployed on Sunday, 30th October to their various duty stations to ensure logistical arrangements at registration points are arranged in advance before the process starts.
The ECN commenced with its Voter and Civic Education campaign for the SRV on 17th October to encourage the electorate to register to vote.
