Model Seagulls opens in Walvis Bay

Model, the retailer within the Ohlthaver & List (OL) Group, has officially launched Model Seagulls in Walvis Bay, further strengthening its presence at the coast while creating employment, supporting local businesses and expanding opportunities for Namibian suppliers.

Representing an investment of approximately N$33 million, the project delivered significant economic benefit during construction, with around 75% of the spend directed to coastal service providers.

At the centre of the new store is a team of 70 employees, including 29 new hires. The remaining positions are filled by employees who successfully applied from other Model stores, while 12 previously fixed-term employees have secured permanent roles.

Local economic impact at Model Seagulls is also felt across its supply chain. Approximately 95% of Model’s supplier base consists of Namibian suppliers, supported by a dedicated Namibian buying team with full decision-making authority over product sourcing and range selection.

At the coast, Model has secured partnerships with local SMEs who provide daily and weekly deliveries of fresh flowers, fruit and vegetables, as well as locally roasted coffee, ensuring that coastal businesses form part of the store’s value chain.

Delivering the keynote address at the official event on behalf of the governor of the Erongo region, the mayor of Walvis Bay, Johannes Shimbilinga, said: “Retail investments of this nature have an impact far beyond the store itself. They create employment, open markets for local producers and entrepreneurs and support a wider network of service providers.”

According to executive chairman, OL, Sven Thieme, this new store reflects confidence in the coastal economy and OL’s long-term commitment to Namibia’s growth.

Model Seagulls forms part of the retailer’s phased national growth strategy and brings Model’s signature shopping experience to the coast.

Located on the site of OL’s historic Seagulls Shopping Mall, the property has served the coastal community for decades and has benefitted from ongoing investment aimed at safeguarding its long-term value.

Founded in Namibia in 1965, Model celebrates more than six decades of retail heritage.

Since returning to full Namibian ownership in July 2025, the retailer has continued its transformation journey, combining world-class standards with locally driven decision-making and the warmth of authentic Namibian hospitality.

OL operations span fishing and aquaculture through Hangana Seafood and Hangana Abalone; fresh produce via Namibia Dairies and Hartlief meat processing and retail through the Model grocery chain.

OL develops and manages premier properties including Wernhil through Broll Namibia, while OL Leisure operates six distinguished hotels and lodges.
