The Khomas Regional Football Association (KRFA) has pledged to improve medical readiness at matches after a player from Deutscher Turn- und Sportverein Windhoek (DTS) suffered a concussion on Saturday without medical personnel or an ambulance present.
The player, who has not been named, was injured during a Namport Khomas Second Division match between DTS and Tura Magic after he collided with an opponent.
Concerns about emergency response measures arose because there were no qualified medical staff or an ambulance available at the match venue.
KRFA chairperson Immanuel Atanasiu admitted the lack of medical personnel and an ambulance and promised changes to prevent similar incidents.
“This incident serves as a sobering reminder of the potential risks involved in a contact sport, and I sincerely regret we faced such a significant medical situation during our match. I extend my heartfelt gratitude to everyone who stepped in to assist during the incident. Your quick actions made the difference in ensuring the player’s safety,” said Atanasiu.
Atanasiu urged teams to have at least one person with basic first aid training on the bench for every match to handle emergencies.
“Additionally, the Khomas Regional Football Association executive committee will actively pursue the option of having qualified medical personnel available at every game as the level and intensity of the competition continue to rise. We must prioritise the well-being of our players and provide immediate medical assistance when necessary,” said Atanasiu.
