The Independent Patriots for Change (IPC) says its vice president, Trevino Forbes, is recovering well after being involved in a car accident on Wednesday evening.
Christine !Auchamus, the IPC’s National General Secretary, confirmed to the Windhoek Observer that Forbes, who also serves as the mayor of Walvis Bay, sustained a broken collarbone in the incident.
She added that the news sent shockwaves through the party’s membership.
“News about any motor vehicle accident is always shocking. It is so much worse when people know the person or persons involved,” she said.
She added that the incident, which took place within the town’s limits, left Forbes injured.
!Auchamus also said that Forbes had since been discharged from the hospital and was recuperating at home.
“We are relieved that the accident was not fatal. Fortunately, no one else involved in the crash was injured or killed,” she said.
The Municipality of Walvis Bay released a separate statement to inform the public and reassure concerned residents.
The local authority confirmed that the mayor was hospitalised and added that his condition was reported as stable shortly after the crash.
“We are relieved to report that the mayor is not in critical condition and his wife sustained no injuries,” the statement read.
According to the municipality’s statement, medical personnel assessed the occupants of the other vehicle involved in the collision at the scene and confirmed that they were unharmed.
The municipality commended the swift response of emergency services and the medical team, noting that a high standard of care was provided throughout.
“We respectfully request the public to allow the mayor and all those involved the privacy and space needed to rest and recover. We also ask that compassion and understanding be extended to the occupants of the other vehicle, as this incident has been distressing for all parties,” the municipality urged.
The public was invited to keep the mayor and everyone affected by the incident in their thoughts and prayers during the recovery process.
