The Independent Patriots for Change (IPC) has called on the nation to unite in efforts to collectively fight violent crime.
The party spokesperson, Immanuel Nashinge, made this statement on Thursday in response to the recent violent death of Matheus Sheehama from Walvis Bay.
“We call upon the Namibian police, parents, and our communities to bolster their efforts in addressing these violent crimes as a collective. Efforts to combat crime can’t be left alone to Nampol,” he said.
Nashinge said the incident in which Sheehama lost his life highlights a grave issue that demands immediate attention.
He said the police require community assistance to fight crimes of that nature.
He suggested that law enforcement agencies increase patrols, enhance community engagement, and sniff for drug use and alcohol abuse.
He further urged the police to prioritise investigating these incidents to ensure the safety of all residents in the Erongo Region.
After going missing for ten days, the late Sheehama’s body washed ashore near the Naval Base at Walvis Bay.
Five men who are accused of attacking Sheehama at a braai in July appeared in the Walvis Bay magistrate court last week.
Nashinge said such acts not only rob young lives but also instill fear within the community.
“The IPC unequivocally condemns such acts of violence since not only rob young lives but also instill fear within our communities. The tragic loss of Matheus is a stark reminder of the urgent need for effective measures to combat crime and protect our youth,” he said.
According to Nashinge, the IPC calls for comprehensive strategies to address both the symptoms and causes of these violent acts.
He believes that only through collective effort can Namibia create a safer environment where young people can thrive.
“We offer our deepest condolences to the family of the late Sheehama and all the families that have lost their loved ones through this excruciating tragedy and work of crime,” he said.
