Walvis Bay is geared up to ensure residents and visitors enjoy a safe, clean, and exciting festive season.
Mayor Trevino Forbes has encouraged the community to reflect on the challenges of the past year while embracing the spirit of togetherness and renewal that Christmas brings.
In a special festive season message, Forbes praised the resilience and unity of Walvis Bay’s residents, describing 2024 as a year that tested the town’s collective strength.
“Neighbours supported one another, local businesses found innovative ways to serve their customers, and countless acts of kindness reminded us of the good in humanity. It is this unwavering spirit that gives me hope as we look toward the new year,” he said.
The mayor reminded residents to prioritise safety during the celebrations, particularly on the town’s popular beaches.
“If you’re heading to our beautiful beaches, please follow safety guidelines, swim only in designated areas, and be vigilant, especially with children,” he urged.
He also appealed for responsible environmental behaviour, urging beachgoers to dispose of waste properly and respect shared spaces.
The festive preparations come with extensive measures to manage safety, traffic, and cleanliness.
The local authority outlined steps taken to accommodate the influx of holidaymakers.
The Dolphin Park Swimming Pool will welcome visitors from 12 December, while the Esplanade Swimming Pool will reopen on 20 December.
Lifeguards have been contracted to monitor popular beaches, including Independence Beach, Langstrand, and Dolphin Beach, ensuring safety between 09:00 and 18:00 daily.
Additional law enforcement personnel and emergency response teams will be deployed to secure the town throughout the season.
Traffic control measures have also been intensified to ensure smooth movement and compliance with road safety regulations.
“We appeal to all drivers to obey traffic rules, avoid reckless behaviour, and be considerate to other road users. Let’s ensure that everyone reaches their destinations safely,” Forbes stressed.
According to the mayor, the municipality’s departments have undertaken extensive housekeeping activities to prepare Walvis Bay for the season, including street sweeping, palm tree trimming, and repairs to public facilities.
Waste management services have been enhanced, with a focus on high-traffic areas to maintain cleanliness.
“Visitors and residents alike can look forward to a variety of attractions and activities, from scenic boat tours and dune adventures to enjoying the town’s pristine beaches and local cuisine,” he said.
Forbes encouraged residents and visitors to embrace the festive spirit while adhering to safety guidelines.
He also expressed optimism about the year ahead, urging residents to carry forward the lessons learned in 2024.
“Together, we can build a brighter future and turn challenges into triumphs. I wish you and your loved ones a wonderful Christmas filled with joy and a new year filled with hope and promise,” he said.
He also assured visitors of a warm welcome and encouraged them to create lasting memories.
