Residents of Groot Aub have been assured that municipal services provided by the City of Windhoek will remain free of charge as government pushes ahead with development projects aimed at improving living conditions in the settlement.
The assurance was given during a consultative meeting held on Tuesday between the ministry of urban and rural development, the City of Windhoek, the Khomas Regional Council and members of the Groot Aub community.
Discussions centred on land ownership, housing, municipal services, infrastructure and future spatial development.
The city’s strategic executive for property management and human settlements, Faniel Maanda, said residents continue to receive water, sewerage and solid waste services at no cost.
He added that the municipality is also investing in critical infrastructure, including the ongoing Phase 2 Groot Aub Water Pipeline Upgrade.
According to the city, the latest pipeline replacement project brings its total investment in Groot Aub’s water infrastructure to N$18.4 million, with N$11 million spent on pipeline materials alone.
Line minister James Sankwasa told residents that meaningful development requires patience, saying, “Rome wasn’t built in one day.”
Sankwasa also cautioned residents against the illegal sale of land, stressing that land allocation is governed by law.
He urged residents to obtain lease agreements, describing them as the legal basis for occupying and developing their properties.
Groot Aub, which has an estimated population of about 20 000 people, continues to be the focus of government efforts to expand access to services, strengthen infrastructure and support sustainable community development.
