Kunene Regional Governor, Marius Sheya issued a stern warning over escalating tribal tensions between the Damara and Nama communities in the Khorixas area, specifically within Ward 9.
The discord, rooted in disputes over ancestral land claims and the allocation of plots at a local resettlement farm, threatens to deepen the divides within this communal area.
Sheya’s caution comes amid increasing bitterness and hostility voiced through local radio stations, a trend he urged to cease immediately to prevent the situation from spiralling into outright conflict.
Sheya stressed the urgent need for local leadership intervention to address the matter comprehensively and to outline a path forward because of the extremely detrimental impact of tribalism,
While addressing the community of Fransfontein over the weekend, Sheya extended a call to the new chief-designate of the Swartbooi Traditional Authority, Charles Otto /Urib, along with other community leaders, to tackle not only the simmering tribal issues but also to seize economic opportunities.
He pointed specifically to the potential benefits of a planned road construction project in the area, which could bring significant development and prosperity to the local communities if embraced collectively. By urging a swift resolution to the land dispute and advocating for unity in the face of economic development, Sheya steered the conversation towards reconciliation and growth.
He said this approach reflects a broader vision for the Kunene region, where harmony among its diverse communities is seen as essential to overcoming developmental challenges and harnessing the full potential of its people and natural resources.
Sheya was of the opinion that through dialogue, collaboration, and a shared commitment to progress, Khorixas can overcome its current tensions and emerge stronger, more united, and ready to embrace the opportunities that lie ahead.
