The Ohangwena regional governor, Sebastian Ndeitunga urged the residents of the region to follow guidelines by the Ministry of Health and Social Services concerning the monkeypox (Mpox) virus.
Ndeitunga said this in an interview with the Windhoek Observer Newspaper on Wednesday.
“People should follow what the ministry says about the virus to ensure that no fear has been created among members of the public in the region,” he said.
According to Ndeitunga, no cases of infection with the virus have been reported in the region.
“Until now, no case of that virus has been reported in our region. If there is any, I am not aware of it,” said the governor.
He urged the residents to report any cases with symptoms of Mpox at a nearby health facility.
“We have learned a lot from COVID-19. I trust that hospitals in our region are ready to deal with such a virus if it happens to enter the region,” Ndeitunga said.
He added that prevention is better than cure and he encouraged all residents to try and protect themselves from the virus.
“As we know, such viruses require the isolation of victims. If we find ourselves in this situation, we will need facilities ready to accommodate the victims. Therefore, urging our people to follow what was presented by the ministry,” he said.
Ndeitunga encouraged the public not to spread misinformation because the virus is a serious concern.
There have been no reported cases in the region, according to Zambezi regional governor Lawrence Sampofu.
“I just came from Omuthiya, I cannot comment further. Give me until tomorrow to find out from health officials. What I can only comment on is that, so far, we do not have any cases reported in our region,” he said.
