Peya Mushelenga, the Minister of Information, Communication and Technology, has urged the public to remain patient as the funeral arrangements for former President Hage Geingob are still being finalized.
He provided updates and clarified the mourning protocols to be observed nationwide, in response to the public’s growing anticipation for the announcement of the funeral date.
Mushelenga stressed that the national preparatory committee is currently working on the arrangements and will announce the funeral date when it is appropriate.
He appealed to the public to stay calm and observe the mourning period, assuring that the government’s information centre will start providing regular updates from Wednesday onward until the funeral date is announced.
“The period of national mourning is a time for reflection, mourning, and honouring the former Head of State. It is important for us to maintain calm during this time,” Mushelenga stated.
He also noted that the Ministry of Information, Communication, and Technology (MICT) is the sole authority for disseminating information about the funeral and related ceremonies, advising the public to disregard any unofficial information.
The minister further mentioned that the national preparatory committee will keep the MICT informed about the preparations to ensure accurate public communication.
Regarding regional ceremonies in honour of the late President, Mushelenga advised that any such initiatives should be coordinated with the Executive Office of MICT for approval.
He also encouraged individuals and choirs wishing to participate in memorial services or the funeral to coordinate with the ministry.
Addressing rumours about the late President’s body being transported to various regions of Namibia, Mushelenga clarified that only the national preparatory committee has the authority to make such decisions.
Updates on funeral preparations will be provided daily at 16:00 by the MICT information centre.
