The family of Sheehama Matheus, who was reported missing on 27 July 2024, expressed their grief after his body was found at Independence Beach on Tuesday.

Matheus’ body was discovered on the beach behind the navy base in Walvis Bay.

He had been missing since an assault at a braai in the Tutaleni location on 27 July.

“This death is a huge loss to the family, especially the mother,” said a family spokesperson Nuujoma Martins.

Martins described Matheus as someone who loved making jokes.

“He used to love making jokes and was very helpful when it came to house chores. He enjoyed playing pranks,” said Martins.

He said before his disappearance that he had visited his aunt’s house to help with chores before going out.

Matheus, a final-year engineering student, was the eldest of three siblings and had aspirations of supporting his family.

Court documents indicate that Matheus’s accusation of slapping his girlfriend’s brother led to the assault.

The suspects, Jimmy Gaeb (24), Marvin Wapota (20), Romano Paulus (20), Enrico Gomachab (20), and another 24-year-old male, were denied bail when they appeared in the Walvis Bay Magistrates Court.

The police investigation continues, with a post-mortem examination planned to determine the cause of death.
