Tsumeb regional councillor and member of the National Council, Matheus Hangula has denied being arrested.
His denial comes after reports surfaced on Monday claiming Hangula was arrested after N$2 million was allegedly discovered in his bank account.
“It must be amazing to be able to answer calls while arrested. Rumours belong to rumour mongers. I’m focusing on constructive things,” Hangula told the Windhoek Observer on Tuesday.
The alleged arrest remains unconfirmed.
The allegations gained traction after constituents who visited his constituency office were reportedly told Hangula would be away in Gobabis for three months.
The Windhoek Observer, however, established he was actually in the Zambezi region, fulfilling his duties as a member of the National Council Standing Committee on Transport, Infrastructure and Housing, which is engaging stakeholders in the Zambezi on the motion for urgent measures to combat Namibia’s rising road accidents crisis.
The consultations are part of the committee’s constitutional oversight and public participation mandate, aimed at obtaining expert recommendations, assessing the effectiveness of existing road safety regulations and enforcement mechanisms, and identifying factors contributing to the high accident rate.
