Michael Tune and his son Michael Tune Junior won the Nedbank Desert Classic golf tournament, which took place at the Rössmund Golf Course in Swakopmund in December 2024.
Nedbank Namibia Communications and Public Relations Manager Selma Kaulinge informed Windhoek Observer on Wednesday that the duo scored 46 points in round one, before scoring 48 points in round two the following day to emerge as overall winners with 94 points at the end of the tournament.
She said Tune senior and Tune junior beat another father-and-son team of Fritz Coetzee Jr. and Fritz Coetzee Snr.
They came second after registering 45 points and 48 points to finish third with an overall total of 93 points.
Third place was won by John Emuno and Gabriel Andreas, who scored 50 points and 43 points to finish with 93 points.
Tune Senior said he has played in the tournament for the past 10 years with different partners and only teamed up with my son in 2023 when they finished sixth, describing their victory as a sweet one.
“It was a fantastic tournament with a strong field, and for us to dethrone the two-time back-to-back father-and-son champions makes this victory even sweeter. At the 18th hole, I told my son that we were probably in the top four, but he seemed confident that we had won it. When we went in for the results announcement, I noticed everybody was looking at us, so I started to believe we won,” he said.
Nedbank Desert Classic golf tournament organiser Dan Zwiebel described the tournament as a huge success.
“Once again, we have witnessed great success with the 2024 Nedbank Desert Classic golf tournament. We are extremely proud and grateful to the players who took time during their festive season celebrations to be with us. Thank you to Nedbank Namibia and Hollard for being part of this great spectacle. We are looking forward to yet another great 2025 amateur golfing season,” he said.
Nedbank Namibia’s Executive Head of Marketing and Communications, Gernot de Klerk, reaffirmed the bank’s commitment to creating an unforgettable experience by ensuring that the tournament creates lasting connections within the golf community to elevate the sport’s significance in Namibia.
“As money experts who do good, Nedbank Namibia aims to remain golf’s greatest partner in this country. Congratulations to the winners, the organisers, the sponsors, and everybody who took part,” he said.
