Exports by sea reached N$5.8 billion in November

During November 2024, goods worth N$5.8 billion, representing 47.6% of total exports, left the country by sea.

The basket of exports via sea comprised mainly of uranium and ‘copper and articles of copper.

Goods exported via air accounted for 28.9% of total exports and its export basket was mainly made up of precious stones (diamonds) and non-monetary gold, Namibia Statistics Agency trade figures have revealed.

Road transportation accounted for 23.5%, with ‘fruits and nuts,’ petroleum oils and fish being the highest-valued commodities transported via the respective mode.

In terms of volume, a total of 337 518 tons of goods left the country, representing a decrease of 6% and 0.5% when compared to October 2024 and November 2023, respectively.

During November, 193 159 tons of goods were recorded as exported via road, representing an increase of 11.5% month-on-month and 14.2% year-on-year. A total of 144 261 tons of goods left the country by sea, yielding a decrease of 41 279 tons and 25 774 tons when compared to 185 540 tons and 170 036 tons registered in October 2024 and November 2023, respectively.

Finally, only 97 tons of goods left the country by air during November 2024, indicating a decrease of 29 tons month-on-month and an increase of 9 tons year-on-year.

Road transportation was the most valued mode of transport used for the goods imported during the month under review. Imports by road were valued at N$9.1 billion, representing a 51.5% share of all goods imported into the country. Nickel ores and concentrates, inorganic chemical elements and motor vehicles for the transportation of goods were the commodities with the highest value imported via this respective mode of transport.

Sea transport followed in second place, accounting for 29.6% of all goods imported into the country and its basket comprised mainly of petroleum oils. Finally, 19% of total goods imported reached Namibia via air, which were aircraft and associated equipment’ and precious stones.

Concerning volume, on the demand side, goods imported into the country amounted to 552 310 tons during the month under review, decreasing by 0.1% compared to the previous month and increasing by 1% year-on-year.

During the month under review, 286 264 tons of goods arrived in Namibia by road, this translates into an increase of 27.8% and 25% when compared to 223 960 tons and 228 925 tons recorded in October 2024 and November 2023, respectively. Additionally, 265 570 tons of goods entered the country by sea, translating into a decrease of 19.1% and 16.3% when compared to 328 366 tons recorded the previous month and 317 361 tons in November 2023.

Finally, 449 tons of goods arrived in the country by Air during November, yielding an increase of 167 tons and 218 tons when compared to 282 tons and 231 tons recorded in October 2024 and November 2023, respectively.
