Michelle Doman and Rodger Suren claimed victories in the elite women’s and elite men’s categories, respectively, at the second edition of the 2025 Nedbank Windhoek Pedal Power Race Series.
The event took place last Sunday at Copper Kettle in Windhoek.
Suren secured his win in a closely contested sprint finish, narrowly beating Christiaan Van Rensburg, who finished second, and Kevin Lowe, who took third place.
Reflecting on the race, Suren expressed his excitement about returning to the Copper Kettle route after a two-year absence.
“We started easy. The first lap was calm, and then the attacks started coming one after the other. We had a breakaway of about nine riders with Drikus Coetzee and Christiaan Van Rensburg breaking away from the rest. Drikus got a flat tyre, which made Christiaan continue the breakaway on his own. On lap seven, we caught up with Christiaan, which came down to the sprint, and I went all the way to take it home,” Suren said.
He described the race as tough, especially from lap four to eight, as the intensity increased despite the flat course and cooler weather due to the early start.
In the elite women’s category, Doman claimed victory after a sprint finish against Louise Breed, who secured second place, and Delsia Janse Van Vuuren, who finished third.
Stefanus Feris, the race organizer from the Windhoek Pedal Power Road Cycling Club, expressed satisfaction with the return of the Copper Kettle route and the turnout of participants.
“We are happy to have the Copper Kettle route back after a two-year absence and were impressed with the total number of cyclists who raced,” he said.
Selma Kaulinge, The communication and public relations manager of Nedbank Namibia praised the organizers and highlighted the event’s significance in promoting cycling in Namibia.
“The impressive turnout of 216 participants is a clear testament to the growing popularity of cycling in Namibia. Cycling has truly captured the hearts of Namibians from all walks of life,” she said.
Kaulinge called on the Namibian Cycling Federation and all cycling clubs to continue their efforts to make the sport accessible to all Namibians.
