The Hosea Kutako International Airport in Windhoek welcomed a new direct air link to Munich when Discover Airlines launched its first scheduled flight between the two cities on Tuesday.
Marco Goetz, Chief Commercial Officer of Discover Airlines, said in a statement on Wednesday that the new route offers Windhoek its only direct connection to Munich, operated three times a week throughout the year.
He added that the first flight between the two cities, Flight 4Y142, departed Munich Airport on Tuesday night and touched down in Windhoek on Wednesday morning.
“Flights will initially depart from Windhoek on Wednesdays, Fridays, and Sundays in the late evening, before shifting to Mondays, Thursdays, and Saturdays from May onwards,” he said.
Discover Airlines, a leisure-focused carrier and part of the Lufthansa Group, has been flying to Namibia since August 2021, initially connecting Windhoek with Frankfurt.
Goetz said that with the addition of the Munich route, the airline now offers ten weekly non-stop flights between Germany and Namibia—seven from Frankfurt and three from Munich.
“We are thrilled to offer this new direct route between Windhoek and Munich. Airlines. Since we started flying here from Frankfurt, Windhoek has been one of the most frequented destinations of our airline. We are already seeing strong demand from travellers from southern Germany,” he said.
Goetz added that the airline considers Windhoek a reliable destination within its network, and he anticipates the new connection will improve travel options between the regions.
He said the new link not only enhances Namibia’s access to Germany but also expands connectivity across the globe through the Lufthansa Group’s network.
Passengers can connect to various international destinations through Munich and Frankfurt, two of Germany’s busiest aviation hubs.
Munich Airport is the country’s second-largest airport and a key gateway to southern Germany.
Goetz said that the airline will use an Airbus A330-300 for the Windhoek-Munich route.
The aircraft can accommodate up to 300 passengers across three classes: 30 in business class, up to 31 in premium economy, and up to 244 in economy.
Each class includes personalised in-flight entertainment, while Wi-Fi and complimentary messaging will be available to all passengers from this summer.
According to Goetz, flights between Windhoek and Munich will henceforth be available for booking through all official Lufthansa Group channels and travel agencies.
