The reigning netball and football champions of the 2024 Nedbank Namibian Newspaper Cup are preparing to defend their titles at this year’s tournament, set to take place in Outjo from Friday, 18 April to Monday, 21 April.

The three-time back-to-back netball champions from the Khomas region are aiming for a fourth consecutive win.

Khomas Netball Regional Secretary General Erica van Zyl said the region conducted constituency trials before selecting its final team.

“Our girls have been trained in the fundamentals of netball from an early age, making the transition to the under-19 level seamless. We also have programs to train teachers at the primary and high school levels, who then pass on their knowledge to the players. This will be evident during the tournament,” she said.

Head coach Enrica Farmer, who led Khomas to two titles, remains confident despite losing 90% of her players to the Region 5 team, which will represent Namibia in Windhoek in June and July.

“Most of the new girls play in the Khomas league and the school league. I have been in touch with their coaches to monitor their performances and have given them specific instructions on areas for improvement,” she said.

Farmer noted that the training camp has focused on teamwork and cohesion and declared the team ready for the challenge.

On the football side, Omusati region, last year’s champions, began their preparations in October 2024, coinciding with the start of the regional second division, where most of their under-20 players compete.

Omusati NFA Regional Chairperson Benjamin Ekondo said the technical team that led the region to victory in Gobabis last year remains unchanged.

“The draw is once again favourable to us. Like last year, we have two teams in our group. Our preparations have gone well, and we have selected the best possible team,” he said.

Football coach Shipena Nakalondo said the team’s goal is clear.

“We come to this tournament to defend our title. We understand that all the other teams want to beat us, but we are ready. We have the core of the team that won us the trophy last year, and we have infused new, talented players into the squad,” he said.

He added that the team held its training camp at Omakange, and despite school commitments, players managed to participate in friendly matches as part of their preparations.

Nedbank Namibia’s Communication and Public Relations Manager, Selma Kaulinge, reaffirmed the bank’s commitment to youth development through sport.

“Nedbank Namibia is proud to once again be part of the Namibian Newspaper Cup, a tournament that continues to shape the future of young football and netball players across the country,” she said.

Kaulinge encouraged residents of Outjo and the wider community to support the event.

“We believe this tournament provides a platform for young athletes to showcase their talent. To all participants, I encourage you to give your best, play with passion and fairness, and embrace this opportunity to grow. Sport is no longer just a pastime; it has become a profession that can open doors to a successful future. We wish all teams the best of luck,” she said.
