DBN appoints Mutenda as its new CFO

The Development Bank of Namibia (DBN) yesterday announced the appointment of Nicky Katapa Mutenda as its new Chief Financial Officer (CFO).

Mutenda will assume his role on December 18, 2023, and is expected to serve for five years.

John Steytler, DBN’s Chief Executive Officer, said that Mutenda’s appointment followed a thorough selection process conducted by a panel consisting of six distinguished individuals from the DBN Board and external experts.

Steytler expressed firm confidence in Mutenda, recognizing him as a capable candidate who would contribute to the bank’s success and growth.

Mutenda brings more than 11 years of experience in the banking sector to his new position. He holds professional designations such as Chartered Accountant (South Africa), Chartered Certified Accountant, and ACI Financial Markets Association Certified Market Professional. In addition to these qualifications, Mutenda earned a Postgraduate Diploma in Accountancy from Rhodes University and a Bachelor’s Degree in Commerce from the University of Namibia.

His educational achievements also include the ACI Diploma (Merit) and the ACI Dealing Certificate (Distinction).

Steytler said Mutenda’s journey started with the DBN in May 2017 when he was appointed as the bank’s first Manager of Treasury.

During his tenure, he successfully established a fully-fledged treasury function at DBN. This dedication and expertise led to his promotion to the position of Treasurer/Senior Manager of treasury in August 2021. Now, after just two years, he ascends to the role of Chief Financial Officer and Chief Treasurer.

Before joining DBN, Mutenda was the Treasury Finance Manager at First National Bank of Namibia Limited.

He also completed his Chartered Accountancy Training Outside Public Practice articles at Absa Bank Limited in Johannesburg between 2013 and 2015, gaining valuable experience in diverse areas, including Exchange Traded Funds, CIB Loan Portfolio Product Control, and Group Internal Audit during his time at Absa.

Beyond his role at DBN, Mutenda is an active contributor to the Namibian corporate landscape. He serves as an Independent Non-Executive Director of PowerCom and UNAM Foundation.

Additionally, he holds the position of External Committee Member on the Board Investment Committee of the Motor Vehicle Accident (MVA) Fund and the Finance and Audit Committee of the Namibia Institute of Corporate Governance.

Mutenda’s appointment is expected to bring fresh financial leadership to DBN, reinforcing the institution’s commitment to its mission and objectives in the financial sector.
