The City of Windhoek (CoW) has come under fire for its failure to address the unsightly conditions between the Ministry of Defence, Veteran Affairs, and Checkers. Numerous visitors to the city have been shocked by the presence of dead grass and litter in this particular area. The general public has voiced their concerns, stating that an open space within the town displaying such a visible mess does not reflect positively on the Capital City, which is a preferred destination for many foreigners. Additionally, members of the public have raised alarm over the fact that this area has become a hotspot for criminal activities and prostitution.

The neglect of this specific location by the City of Windhoek has sparked criticism from residents and visitors alike. The presence of dead ground grass and litter not only creates an unappealing visual environment but also sends a negative message about the city’s overall cleanliness and maintenance efforts. As a prominent destination for tourists, it is crucial for Windhoek to maintain a positive image that aligns with its status as the capital city.

Furthermore, concerns have been raised regarding the potential safety risks associated with this neglected area. The accumulation of litter and lack of maintenance have created an environment that attracts criminal elements and individuals involved in illicit activities such as prostitution. This poses a threat to both residents and visitors who may inadvertently find themselves in proximity to these illegal activities.

“I was walking all the way behind Checkers from the Ministry of Defense and Veteran Affairs building and was attacked by two males who were lurking around the Checkers parking lot wall. They snatched my cellphone and took my handbag before fleeing and leaving me befuddled,” Hileni Andimba, a town street vendor said.

She further stated that many young women are using the space as a prostitution hub during nighttime in order to make ends meet.

Andimba reasoned that the location is being used for criminal and prostitution activities since it appears dirty and as if no one owns it.

She remarked that if the location belongs to City of Windhoek, it should be maintained to avoid such heinous crimes; otherwise, such cruel acts will continue to occur there.

Andimba went on to say that the location has become a gathering place for robbers and crooks who use it as a meeting place where their plan their operations.

Meanwhile, Simon Shivute, a security guard near the area, pointed out that a number of young men utilise the area for smoking and concealing stolen items.

“I still remember when one woman approached me screaming after they took away her cellphone. I will try to find out from the department responsible and will go there to tell them to get their act together. They need to clean this place and bring sanity to the city,” he stated.

Meanwhile, Joseph Uapingene, the Mayor of CoW, acknowledged his awareness of the location but claimed to be unaware of any criminal or illegal activities occurring there. He stated, “We have not received any reports about the location; however, if complaints have been expressed, it means that something is going on, and we need to find out.” Additionally, Uapingene mentioned that certain areas of the city might be owned by individuals who have neglected their responsibility to maintain cleanliness.
