Botswana has rerouted traffic to Namibia due to severe flooding that has forced the closure of several border posts between Botswana and South Africa.

The Trans Kalahari Corridor Secretariat (TKCS) issued a warning on Tuesday, alerting the public to expect potential congestion at Namibian borders as a result.

TKCS executive director, Leslie Mpofu urged motorists, particularly truck owners and drivers, to plan their routes carefully to avoid delays.

The affected border posts include Stockpoort/Parr’s Halt, Makgobistad/Phitsane Molopo, Bray, Groblersbridge/Martins Drift, and Pontdrift.

Traffic will now be diverted to Trans Kalahari Corridor (TKC) borders, such as Tlokweng/Kopfontein, Pioneer/Skilpadshek, and Ramatlabama.

“It is anticipated that the closure of these borders will increase traffic at the TKC borders, causing delays and long queues. We expect these border closures to significantly impact traffic at the TKC borders. Long queues and delays are anticipated, and we urge travellers to plan their journeys accordingly,” said Mpofu.

He also highlighted potential challenges, including environmental and sanitation concerns, littering, and a lack of potable water for truck drivers.

Mpofu called on border authorities to address these issues swiftly to ensure the well-being of transporters.

“Additionally, travellers and transporters are cautioned regarding service delivery protests on the N4, between Zeerust and Skilpadshek. South African authorities have been informed of these protests, and they are attending to these protests. TKCS therefore wishes to advise users of the corridor to remain calm, patient, and cooperative as the situation is being resolved,” cautioned Mpofu.

The TKCS will continue to monitor the situation at the affected ports of entry and provide updates as it evolves.

Travellers are advised to stay informed and prepare for possible delays.
