High Court dismisses Gideon’s application

Staff Writer The High Court on Friday delivered its judgement dismissing Professor Frednard Gideon’s application with costs. Gideon had challenged the appointment of Dr Erold Naomab as the Vice-Chancellor (VC) of Namibia University of Science and Technology (NUST). Civil servants need to perform or be cut

Do the people employed in the civil service who treat the public so poorly understand that jobs are scarce and precious? Right now, a job is a valuable commodity. Many people who have endured salary cuts or retrenchments or bankruptcy of their employers are desperate for jobs. Some of those sitting at home unemployed have more skills than many standing behind ministry counters or sitting at agency desks. People who need work would give a lot to replace them. Civil servants need to know that they must do their jobs or be retrenched to save money. The civil service wage…

BoN maintains Repo rate at 3.75 percent

Staff Writer The Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) of the Bank of Namibia has decided to keep the Repo rate unchanged at 3.75 percent. “This decision was taken following a review of global, regional and domestic economic and financial developments. The MPC is of the view that the rate remains appropriate to continue supporting domestic economic activity, while at the same time safeguarding the one-to-one link between the Namibia Dollar and the South African Rand,” BON Governor, Johannes !Gawaxab announced on Wednesday. !Gawaxab said the domestic economic activity declined during the first ten months of 2020 and is forecasted to register…

RFA faces resistance over tolling plans

RFA faces resistance over tolling plans

Staff Writer A mooted plan by the Road Fund Administration (RFA) to introduce toll booths on certain national roads in Namibia already faces resistance from political parties and national unions. This comes as RFA stated that a feasibility study finalised a few months ago found charging tolls on certain road sections in Namibia is feasible and viable. It claims that these new revenues would generate approximately N$3.9 billion over a five-year period. This supposed finding is a direct contradiction the 2019 finding by former Minister of Finance and current Minister of Agriculture, Water and Land Reform, Calle Schlettwein who said…

Bank of Namibia watches our wallets

The Bank of Namibia (BoN) has come to the rescue. They have classified the activities of Mufhiwa Building Projects as a pyramid scheme. Those involved are conning people out of their hard-earned money and pocketing the proceeds. BoN has cautioned the public to beware and avoid any transactions with Mufhiwa Building Projects or similar entities that may be doing the exact same thing. BoN has ordered promoters of Mufhiwa Building Projects and those who are already caught in its web as ‘members’ to stop doing any kind of business. A nod must be given to BoN for watching our wallets.…

Careful planning remains key to ensure emotional and financial readiness

Growing numbers of millennial women — who are between 23 and 39 years old in 2020 — are choosing to start having children later in their lives. The average age of first-time mothers in many developed countries has risen to just over 30 this year. Furthermore, according to the Guttmacher Institute, more than 40 percent of women in the United States of America have reported delaying having children due to the outbreak of Covid-19. Research reveals that pandemic-related worries about finances and job stability as well as general unease about the future may be shifting how women feel about having…

MPs call for debt waiver

Moses Magadza WINDHOEK – The 48th Plenary Assembly Session of the SADC Parliamentary Forum has adopted a motion exhorting the regional body to support an initiative by Speakers and heads of African national parliaments to call for total cancellation of the continent’s foreign debt. Many African countries are heavily indebted to industrialised countries and financial bodies that include the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the World Bank. Consequently, some countries have been failing to meet the human needs of their citizens. Against this backdrop, the Speaker of the Parliament of South Africa, Honourable Thandi Modise, tabled the motion through South…

Govt faces borrowing headache

Govt faces borrowing headache

Staff Writer The Popular Democratic Movement (PDM) has warned that the country’s indebtedness is reaching precarious levels, a position which could one day hamper its ability to pay the interest on what is owed. This comes as ratings agency, Moody’s downgraded Namibia’s government debt on Friday from the previous Ba2 rating to Ba3. “The government has become so completely dependent on borrowing, that just one more small external shock will put it in a position where it cannot pay the interest on its debt. This will lead to an automatic downgrade to the ‘C’ category according to Moody’s system, which…
