The Alludio Academy Under-11 girls’ field hockey team has triumphed in the 2024 Khomas Schools Sport Region (KSSR) B League championship.
They played their final match against St. George’s on Wednesday at the WAP astroturf field at Wanderers in Windhoek.
The teams entered a tense shootout to determine the winner at the sound of the final whistle because the score was tied at 0-0.
In a dramatic finish, Alludio Academy’s team held their nerve and emerged victorious, securing the championship title.
Emma Cocklin, co-founder of the academy, attributes the team’s performance to the unwavering determination, dedication, and sportsmanship of the young athletes, some of whom only started playing hockey this year.
“Despite facing significant challenges, including playing a crucial match without a goalie, these young girls continued to shine on the field, demonstrating resilience and teamwork beyond their years,” she said.
She said there has been an extraordinary display of dedication throughout the season, as some players even returned to the field after hospital visits for hockey-related injuries, including stitched-up cuts to the head.
“Their commitment to the team and understanding that every player was essential truly set them apart. Most of the u11 girls also went above and beyond by stepping in to help the u13 team on several occasions to ensure they had a full team, further demonstrating their dedication and team spirit,” said Cocklin.
The team coach, Maretha Snyman, also expressed her hopes for the team’s future.
“We are hoping this win will secure our place as a team to be looked out for. We are now aiming to secure sponsorships to assist in purchasing new goalie kits, and two gazebos, and finding a dedicated field where we can train. The success of the U11 girls’ field hockey team is a testament to the spirit of Alludio Academy, where students are encouraged to grow, excel, and overcome challenges both academically and athletically,” she said.
