President Nangolo Mbumba of Namibia welcomed Mohamed Meziane, Algeria’s Minister of Communication and Special Envoy, at State House in Windhoek on Thursday.

The Algerian envoy during the diplomatic engagement at State House in Windhoek sought to strengthen bilateral ties and secure strategic support from Namibia.

Meziane delivered a personal letter from Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune, seeking Namibia’s endorsement for Algeria’s candidate in the upcoming African Union (AU) Commission chairmanship elections.

In response, President Mbumba reiterated the longstanding camaraderie between the two nations.

“Namibia and Algeria have good relations; we have both full diplomatic representation in the capitals,” he said.

The President also spoke about the potential for deeper collaboration in sectors such as education, energy, and technology, highlighting the mutual benefits of such partnerships.

“We want other things to happen, especially in the field of training and education, oil and gas, specific training for specific people to maintain our systems and to maintain especially our economy,” he added.

The discussion also touched upon broader continental issues, notably the aspiration for permanent African representation on the United Nations Security Council.

“We have other issues of concern on the continent; we have been struggling to make sure that Africa is represented permanently on the UN Security Council,” he told the Algerian envoy.

According to the Algerian Press Service, the meeting on Thursday is part of a series of diplomatic interactions between Algeria and Namibia aimed at reinforcing the alliance.

In December 2024, Algeria’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ahmed Attaf, lauded the strong ties between the two countries and called for enhanced cooperation to fulfil the legitimate aspirations of their citizens.

In October 2024, Namibia’s Vice President, Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah, extended congratulations to President Tebboune on his re-election, reflecting the mutual respect and solidarity shared by the two nations.

During Meziane’s visit to State House, he said that is ready to explore avenues to deepen bilateral cooperation.

Both nations reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening relations, particularly in information and communication technology, energy, and agriculture, setting the stage for a more integrated and prosperous partnership.
