THE newly established German Speaking Namibians Forum says that although Germany has decided to pay $1.8 Billion (about N$18 billion) to Namibia for the 1904 genocide against the Ovaherero and Nama, it is not enough to make up for lost lives.
Speaking on behalf of the Forum that paid a courtesy call to state house this morning, Benita Herma, stresses that they met with the Ovaherero Traditional Authority (OTA) and the Nama Traditional Authority Association two weeks ago. The Forum this morning paid a courtesy visit to state house.
“It is difficult to gauge value on human life. Our position is that we support that Germany acknowledges it was a genocide, that they have apologised and want to compensate. We also take note that the negotiation process indeed took a long time,” Herma says.
According to her, the state house visit was aimed at introducing the forum, which was founded in April this year.
“The president did not really want to delve into the genocide matter as it is sensitive. It will be tabled in parliament next week,” Herma says.
