The Judicial Service Commission (JSC) has revealed that Olyvia Martha Imalwa, current Prosecutor General (PG), Ruth Modesta Herunga and Taswald Theo July have been shortlisted for the previously advertised position of the Prosecutor General (PG).
“The Judicial Service Commission was pleased to note the keen interest the Namibian public has taken in the selection process of the Prosecutor-General. The interest shown from a variety of sectors and institutions assures the Commission that its principled decision to open up the process was a rightful one,” Spokesperson of the Office of the Judiciary, Ockert Jansen said.
Judicial Service Commission said Imalwa, Herunga and July had been shortlisted as candidates after meeting the formal requirements previously advertised and will undergo an interview process.
“The JSC herewith informs that eight applicants submitted applications for consideration by the JSC. Out of the eight, five applicants were not shortlisted as they did not meet some of the requirements contained in the advertisement,” he said.
This comes after Affirmative Repositioning (AR) movement President Job Amupanda recently requested the JSC to conduct interviews for the position publicly.
However, the JSC revealed that the interviews will not be conducted publicly.
“Noting the importance of establishing a process that has been carefully considered, extensively consulted on and for which proper guidelines and logistics have been set, the JSC will not at this time make the interviews for the position of Prosecutor-General open to the public.”
Herunga is a former magistrate and current board member of Fishcor.
July is the Group Legal Adviser of First National Bank (FNB) Namibia and Chairperson of Namibia Lawyers Association (NLA).
In a statement, Jansen noted that the JSC has set up a Committee to conduct the review and the work of the Committee include a phase for engagement with the public through organisations, bodies and institutions to be identified when the time comes.
