The upgrade and maintenance of healthcare infrastructure in the Erongo region received a boost following a N$1,25 million donation from uranium miner Rössing Uranium.
Anna Jonas, Erongo Regional Director of Health, during the handover ceremony in Swakopmund on Tuesday, expressed gratitude for the intervention, noting the impact the improvements will have on the community.
She said that the funds will be used to address critical infrastructure needs in hospitals across Walvis Bay, Swakopmund, and Usakos, enhancing the delivery of healthcare services in the region.
“This means a lot to our community, our patients, and our dedicated staff members. The space where our patients receive care impacts their recovery journey, and improving their environment will foster healing, dignity, and hope,” Jonas said.
The Walvis Bay District Hospital will undergo much-needed renovations to its psychiatric ward, which has long been in a state of disrepair.
In Swakopmund, the donation will fund the construction of a boundary wall around the district hospital to enhance security.
Over the years, the absence of a secure perimeter has left the facility vulnerable, prompting the need for this intervention.
Jonas indicated that the construction of the wall is already underway and is expected to be completed in the coming weeks.
The Usakos District Hospital, which has faced logistical and financial challenges due to outsourcing its laundry services, will benefit from an industrial laundry machine.
The equipment, scheduled for installation by February 2025, will streamline operations and reduce reliance on external providers.
“The upgrades aim to create a safer and more supportive environment for patients and staff,” she said.
Jonas praised Rössing for prioritising mental health care through its focus on upgrading the psychiatric ward at Walvis Bay.
She highlighted the significance of such investments in promoting recovery and providing compassionate care to patients in need.
She said that the upgrades are expected to benefit patients, staff, and the broader community, providing a renewed sense of hope and dignity.
“Investing in the renovation of the mental health ward signifies your commitment to mental health care and champions the importance of compassionate care,” she added.
Johan Coetzee, the managing director of Rössing Uranium, stressed the importance of collaboration in addressing healthcare challenges.
“The health of our people is the foundation upon which all other progress is built, and it is essential that we work together to ensure that every individual has access to the care they deserve,” Coetzee said.
According to Coetzee the donation demonstrates Rössing Uranium’s dedication to the well-being of the Erongo community and highlights the critical role of private-sector contributions in strengthening Namibia’s healthcare system.
