The Ministry of Mines and Energy has approved the 2024 ministerial determination for the procurement of new power generation projects, in line with the National Integrated Resource Plan (NIRP) of 2022.

In a statement issued on Thursday, the minister of mines and energy, Tom Alweendo said the determination serves as a strategic guide for NamPower and the broader Electricity Supply Industry (ESI) in the development, procurement, and execution of critical energy projects.

The minister emphasised that the determination reflects the government’s commitment to enhancing energy security and advancing energy independence through sustainable power generation.

The initiative is expected to support the growth and diversification of Namibia’s energy sector, with a particular emphasis on renewable energy sources.

“The determination provides an update on the progress of significant renewable energy initiatives carried out under previous determinations. Legal and policy regulatory frameworks informing and supporting the electricity sector include the Electricity Act, Act 4 of 2007, National Energy Policy, National Renewable Energy Policy, Independent Power Producer Policy and National Integrated Resource Plan,” said Alweendo.

He also announced that the 2024 ministerial determination includes a new allocation of 330 MWW of solar photovoltaic (PV) capacity for procurement and implementation, divided between NamPower and the Independent Power Producer Policy.

“The Ministry is confident that this determination will help drive Namibia towards a more sustainable and secure energy future. The detailed ministerial determination is attached for ease of reference,” the minister said.
