As Namibians prepare to head to the polls tomorrow to elect the country’s fifth president and members of the eighth National Assembly, President Nangolo Mbumba has called on citizens to embrace peace and unity during this significant moment in the nation’s history.
Addressing the nation on the eve of the elections, Mbumba reflected on Namibia’s democratic journey and its commitment to free and fair elections.
“For the past 34 years of our independence, peaceful, fair, and free elections have become part of the cherished culture of our constitutional democracy,” he said.
The President’s remarks come at a time of heightened political activity, with parties and their supporters having engaged in determined campaigns across the country.
Mbumba commended Namibians for their conduct during the campaign period, praising the atmosphere of tolerance and mutual respect.
“The climate in which you campaigned and freely expressed your views in favour of your political parties is a demonstration of the strength of the democratic foundations of the Namibian House,” he said.
Mbumba expressed gratitude to political leaders, parties, and all stakeholders for concluding the electoral preparations successfully.
He said that this year’s elections hold a certain weight, as they follow a challenging period marked by the unexpected passing of Namibia’s third president, Dr Hage Geingob in February.
“Our processes, systems, and institutions were severely tested and remain firm. Thus, we continue the culture of free, fair, and peaceful elections,” he said while reflecting on the resilience of Namibia’s systems and institutions.
Mbumba urged all Namibians to participate actively and responsibly.
“Your participation is a patriotic contribution to the consolidation of our democracy and the development of our motherland. I appeal to you to do so in a calm manner that is peaceful and respectful of one another, the relevant authorities, and the laws of our Republic,” he said.
The President also acknowledged the presence of regional, continental, and international election observation missions.
He welcomed their oversight, assuring them of a peaceful and unhindered stay.
Mbumba also called on the Electoral Commission of Namibia (ECN) to uphold its mandate with integrity and fairness.
“I encourage the commissioners and all ECN staff to carry out their work diligently to uphold our democratic values,” he urged.
The President also recognised the vital role of law enforcement agencies in ensuring safety and security during the electoral process.
He expressed confidence in their ability to maintain order throughout this critical period.
“Our nation is young. Our democracy is young. But with each successfully concluded free and fair election, our multi-party democracy matures and grows deeper roots,” he said while wishing Namibians a peaceful and successful election day.
