The Nangula Mbako Foundation has started a waste recycling workshop in the Khomas region intending to motivate students to maintain a clean environment.

Lawyer, education advocate, and founder of the Nangula Mbako Foundation, Nangula Mbako said knowledge obtained from the workshop is aimed at making the environment a safe place.

“The foundation is not profit-driven. We are encouraging learners to keep their environments clean, and make money out of waste products, which will also assist in keeping the town clean, she said.

The workshop will start next year, and the foundation, in partnership with the NUST Environmental Club, will be visiting various schools in the country.

The NUST environmental club president, Johannes Kalimba, who is leading the initiative, said they have so far visited the Hermann Gmeiner Primary School in Windhoek.

He said they are targeting more schools from different regions next year.

“We are just encouraging learners to start recycling waste products that can be recycled, and in that way, we are teaching them how to keep their environments clean,” Kalimba said.

Kalimba said the response from learners at Gmeiner Primary School was good, and learners have expressed their willingness to participate in the workshop.

He added that learners will then begin collecting waste, such as cans, in exchange for payment.

“The money will not be given directly to the learners but to the school that will be taking the waste products for selling purposes. It can be used for buying school stationery such as printers and ink,” he said.
