The Electoral Commission of Namibia (ECN) has announced that the by-election in the Guinas constituency will be held in January.
The by-elections follow the death of former councillor Elias Barney Martinus, who passed away last month at the age of 51.
The supplementary registration of voters was facilitated from 10 to 12 November.
This will be followed by the publication of the Provisional Voters’ Register in the Government Gazette on 19 November.
The Provisional Voters’ Register will be displayed on 21 November to allow for objections against the inclusion of names of people who do not reside in the constituency.
According to the ECN’s Chief Referenda and Electoral Officer, Peter Shaama, individuals can make representations before a magistrate between 21 November and 6 December, who will subsequently issue a ruling on the matter.
“Under Section 10(3) of the Regional Councils Act No. 22 of 1992, any casual vacancy in a regional council must be filled within three months through a by-election, as proclaimed by the President in the Government Gazette,” Shaama said.
He added that as a standing norm, the schedule was also presented to the members of the Political Party Liaison Committee (PLC) on 8 November for input and consideration.
“The Commission will provide updates as we progress with the execution of the election schedule as part of our commitment to keep our electoral stakeholders and general public informed,” he said.
