Goods worth of N$5.3 billion, representing 53.3% of total exports left the country by sea in July. The basket of exports via sea comprised mainly of uranium, fish and nickel ores and concentrates.
Goods exported via road accounted for 28.6% of total exports, of which its export basket was mainly made up of petroleum oils, fish and live animals. Lastly, air transportation accounted for 18.1% with non-monetary gold and precious stones (diamonds) being the highest valued commodities transported via the respective mode.
In terms of volume, a total of 342 476 tons of goods left the country, representing an increase of 21.6% and a decrease of 47.4% when compared to the months of June 2024 and July 2023, respectively.
In July, 171 413 tons of goods was recorded as exported via road representing an increase of 5.3% month-on-month and 25.6% year-on-year.
A total of 170 935 tons of goods left the country by sea, an increase of 43.8% and a decrease of 66.8% when compared to tons registered in June and the same month of 2023, respectively.
Finally, only 127 tons of goods left the country by air during July, indicating a decrease of one-ton month-on-month and a decrease of 30 tons’ year-on year.
Road transportation was the common mode of transport used for the goods imported during July. Imports by road were valued at N$7 billion, representing 58.4% share of all goods imported into the country. Motor vehicles for the transportation of goods, nickel ores and concentrates and motor cars for the transportation of persons were the commodities with the highest value imported via this respective mode of transport.
Sea transport followed in second place accounting for 37.4% of all goods imported into the country and its basket comprised mainly of petroleum oils, wheat and iron and steel bars.
Finally, 4.1% of total goods imported reached Namibia via air, precious stones (diamonds), telecommunications equipment’ and medicaments were the main commodities transported via air.
With respect to volume, on the demand side, goods imported into the country amounted to 497 790 tons during the month under review, increasing by 37.1% and 23.1% when compared to the previous month and the same month of 2023, respectively.
During the month under review, 291 094 tons of goods arrived in Namibia by sea, this translates into an increase of 66.1% and 9.5% when compared to the tons recorded in June and July 2023, respectively.
Additionally, 206 417 tons of goods entered the country by road, translating into an increase of 18 759 tons and 68 147 tons from the tons recorded the previous month and in July 2023, respectively.
Finally, 180 tons of goods arrived in the country by air during the month of July 2024, yielding a decrease of four tons and 12 tons when compared to June and July 2023, respectively.
