Windhoek High School crowned 2024 champions

After a fiercely competitive season, Windhoek High School U/19 emerged as the 2024 Capricorn Schools Netball League champions.

They narrowly beat Windhoek Gymnasium by 27–26 in a thrilling final encounter.

A. Shipena Secondary School secured bronze.

The competition concluded this past weekend in Windhoek.

Windhoek Gymnasium dominated play in the U/17 final, winning a convincing 39-18 over Centaurus Secondary School, while Rehoboth-based M&K Gertze High School finished third.

Marlize Horn, the executive director of brand and corporate affairs at Capricorn Group, said the Capricorn Schools Netball League has grown in popularity over the past years, allowing school netball players to compete for the national title.

“We are proud of our group’s legacy of positively contributing to netball development in Namibia over many years,” she said.

She said that the Capricorn Schools Netball League provides a platform for netball players to play competitive netball of a high standard, thereby enhancing the overall quality of netball in Namibia.

She commended the effort of the organisers, referees, coaches, parents, and players.

According to Horn, this reaffirms the group’s commitment to supporting women’s sports development at the school level, and they look forward to next year’s League.

In other results, Windhoek Gymnasium claimed the U/15 title after overcoming Windhoek High School 30-26 in the final.

Windhoek Afrikaans Privaatskool won the U14 title after defeating Windhoek Gymnasium 15-9.

In the U/13 final, Windhoek Afrikaans Privaatskool defeated Tsumeb Gymnasium 22-16, while Windhoek Gymnasium were the victors in the U/12 final, winning 22-18 against Windhoek Afrikaans Privaatskool.

According to Liezel Garbers, chairperson of the Capricorn Group Schools Netball League, the 2024 league has been another exhilarating success.

“I am so proud of each and every girl who played this year, and I am grateful for all the support this league receives. Once again, I thank Capricorn Group for sponsoring this league,” said Garbers.

The Namibia Schools Sports Union (NSSU) has endorsed the league, which Capricorn Group has sponsored for the past 11 years.

The league includes teams from U12 to U19.

A total of 85 teams represented a total of 25 public and private schools from various regions, including Khomas, //Kharas, Hardap, Otjozondjupa, Kunene, and Oshikoto.

Omaheke participated in the league for the first time this year.
