Exports worth N$6.8 billion exported via sea

Goods worth of N$6.8 billion, representing 52.8% of total exports left the country by sea in June, the Namibia Statistics Agency said.

The basket of exports via sea comprised mainly of uranium, fish and copper and articles of copper. Goods exported via air accounted for 26.7% of total exports, of which its export basket was mainly made up of diamonds and non-monetary gold. Lastly, Road transportation accounted for 20.5% with fish, petroleum oils and live animals being the highest valued commodities transported via the respective mode.

In terms of volume, a total of 281 689 tons of goods left the country, representing an increase of 4.9% and a decrease of 48% when compared to the months of May 2024 and June 2023, respectively.

During June, 162 743 tons of goods was recorded as exported via road representing an increase of 8% and 14.6% when compared to the preceding month and in June 2023, respectively. A total of 118 821 tons of goods left the country by sea, an increase of 0.9% and a decrease of 70.3% when compared to tons registered in May 2024 and the same month of 2023, respectively. Finally, only 125 tons of goods left the country by Air during June 2024, indicating an increase of 46 tons month-on-month and a decrease of 20 tons year-on year.

Imports by sea were valued at N$6.7 billion, representing 48.5% share of all goods imported into the country. Petroleum oils, ‘copper ores and concentrates’ and ‘rotating electric plant and equipment’ were the commodities with the highest value imported via this respective mode of transport. Road transport followed in second place accounting for 48.1% of all goods imported into the country and its basket comprised mainly of nickel ores and concentrates, motor vehicles for the transportation of goods and motor cars for the transportation of persons. Finally, 3.4% of total goods imported reached Namibia via air, diamonds, telecommunications equipment and automatic data-processing machines were the main commodities transported via air.

With respect to volume, on the demand side, goods imported into the country amounted to 362 993 tons in June decreasing by 12.3% and increasing by 65.8% when compared to the previous month and the same month of 2023, respectively.

In June, 187 172 tons of goods arrived in Namibia by road, translating into an increase of 2.2% and 38.6% when compared to the tons recorded in May 2024 and June 2023, respectively. Additionally, 175 588 tons of goods entered the country by sea, translating into a decrease of 54 989 tons and an increase of 91 925 tons from the tons recorded the previous month and in June 2023, respectively. Finally, 183 tons of goods arrived in the country by air in June, yielding a decrease of 36 tons and an increase of 28 tons when compared to May 2024 and June 2023, respectively.
