The Oshikoto Regional Council has allocated N$4.1 million for rural sanitation and development programmes for the 2024/2025 financial year.
The decision was made at the council’s third meeting held on 8 July 2024.
N$3.3 million of the funds will be used to construct 180 toilets in 10 constituencies, including Guinas, Nehale Lya Mpingana, Omuthiya, Eengodi, Okankolo, Omuntele, Onyaanya, Onayena, Oniipa, and Olukonda. This effort aims to improve sanitation and end open defecation in the region.
Additionally, more than N$800 000 will fund the provision of water under the Food or Cash for Work programme, supporting the Ministry of Agriculture, Water and Land Reform’s efforts to address potable water shortages.
Last year, the council constructed three water pipelines in Omuntele, Okankolo, and Onyaanya constituencies.
Due to low water pressure and feeder pipeline issues, the 2024/2025 budget will install boreholes in Guinas and Nehale Lya Mpingana, each receiving over N$400 000.
The council also approved a cooperation agreement with the Province of Uige in Angola to collaborate on decentralisation, regional governance, local authority administration, traditional authorities, and capacity building.
