The Omaruru municipality and MTC signed a memorandum of understanding to address challenges with the town’s service delivery by creating an avenue for the use of smart meters via the communication service provider’s network.

Sindonga Valentinus, the municipality’s Chief Executive Officer, announced the revolutionary use of technology to improve service delivery.

“As you all know, MTC is nationwide. Everybody is using MTC SIM cards. Now the challenge that we have in our town is that. If the SIM card has a problem, you must travel as far as Otjiwarongo or Swakopmund. Just to have a SIM card replacement. So, with this MoU, it is going to ensure those services,” said Sindongo.

He said Omaruru is surrounded by other small settlements and villages and those residents will be able to receive services at Omaruru.

In addition, he pointed out that another challenge the town has is connectivity, and they are currently migrating to a smart meter network.

He believes that a smart meter network in the town will additionally improve service delivery efficiency, thereby aligning with Vision 2030.

Sindongo said that the town’s goal is to fully digitalise its processes and systems, allowing it to provide better services to its community with improved competence and agility.

“We want to continue serving our people with efficiency and better service quality delivery for our residents. Hence, we are intentional in embracing full digitalisation as we work to improve how we conduct business. MTC is the digital driver and enabler of digitalisation, and we are confident that this cooperation will yield the desired results.” Sindongo.

MTC’s chief commercial officer, Octavious Kahiya says the strategic agreement will see the two institutions harness synergies in the development of an integrated digital innovation agenda.

Kahiya noted that the MoU identifies and assesses areas of common interest and designs socio-economic smart solutions, contributing to Namibia’s transformational development and the National Development Agenda.

“Our collaboration will focus on aligning processes and systems, transforming municipal transaction services, and enhancing a data-driven business. This will enable us to better manage and utilise information, leading to improved access to and management of data. Moreover, we are committed to nurturing local digital innovation and solutions, empowering our citizens to drive positive change in their community,” he said.

He explained that MTC will develop smart home connectivity products for the residents of Omaruru, utilising smart metres.

He pointed out that these innovations will empower consumers with greater control and insight into their utility usage, contributing to more sustainable consumption patterns.

The partnership is said to further involve collaboration with the MTC Innovation Centre, facilitating the exchange of knowledge and experiences.

By exploring and experimenting with ongoing digital trends, both parties aim to identify and implement solutions to societal challenges, promoting sustainable growth and modernity.
