Namibian President Nangolo Mbumba has expressed his unwavering support for South Africa’s newly re-elected President, Cyril Ramaphosa, as he joined other international dignitaries in Pretoria for Ramaphosa’s second inauguration.
This event marks a fundamental moment in South Africa’s political landscape with the formation of the Government of National Unity (GNU).
Chief Justice Raymond Zondo swore in President Ramaphosa at the inauguration ceremony at the Union Buildings.
Nearly 20 heads of state and government, including President Mbumba, attended the event and reaffirmed the strong and enduring bilateral relations between Namibia and South Africa.
President Mbumba highlighted that the new coalition government in South Africa would not affect the solid relations shared between the two nations.
“Namibia and South Africa continue to enjoy deep and close bilateral relations that are built on mutual respect and cooperation. The formation of the GNU is a significant step in ensuring the stability and governability of our neighbour, and it is crucial that we continue to support each other in various areas of cooperation,” Mbumba said.
Mbumba’s comments come as South Africa embarks on a new political chapter with the ruling African National Congress (ANC) and the main opposition party, the Democratic Alliance (DA), joining forces to form a coalition government.
This unprecedented move aims to address the challenges faced by the country and ensure effective governance.
The creation of the GNU represents a significant shift in South Africa’s political dynamics, as it brings together two of the largest political entities, along with smaller parties, to work collaboratively.
President Mbumba noted that the coalition is a testament to the commitment of South Africa’s political leaders to maintain stability and foster a governance framework that benefits all citizens.
“Namibia supports this collaborative approach and believes it is vital for the continued prosperity and stability of the region. Our nations share a common history and future, and it is important that we continue to work together to address the challenges that affect our people,” Mbumba added.
President Cyril Ramaphosa, who was re-elected following a general election in May that did not produce a clear winner, will now lead South Africa for a second five-year term.
His leadership has been pivotal in steering the country through various challenges, and his re-election is seen as a crucial step in ensuring continuity and stability.
In his inaugural address, President Ramaphosa outlined his vision for the future, emphasising the need for unity and cooperation among all South Africans.
He also stressed the importance of working together with neighbouring countries to promote regional stability and economic development.
The president is expected to announce his cabinet in the coming days, as negotiations with coalition partners continue.
This new administration will be tasked with addressing pressing issues such as economic recovery, unemployment, and social inequality.
President Mbumba’s attendance at the inauguration underscores Namibia’s commitment to maintaining strong ties with South Africa.
“Our support for President Ramaphosa and the new coalition government is unwavering. We look forward to continuing our partnership in areas such as trade, security, and regional development, ensuring that our collaboration remains beneficial for both nations,” Mbumba said.
