In an inspiring celebration, the Namibian Navy Gender Division last week commemorated International Women’s Day with a strong message of female empowerment and the crucial role of women in fostering global peace and prosperity.
The annual event, usually celebrated on 8 March, carried the theme “Invest in Women, Accelerate Progress,” underscoring the importance of supporting and advancing women’s roles in society.
Commander Emilia Sheendelwako, the Namibian Navy Gender Adviser, delivered a speech in which she stressed the significance of the day.
She dedicated the celebration to recognizing and honouring the women who have made notable differences in various spheres of life.
“This is the day to appreciate the strength, resilience, and achievements of all women around the world,” she said.
Sheendelwako also addressed the unique challenges faced by women in the military, emphasizing the need for effective strategies to overcome the obstacles that African women encounter in this field.
She urged her colleagues and the community to support creative approaches that enhance women’s participation in peacebuilding efforts and other critical areas.
“Let’s use this moment to complement the creative approaches we implemented and guarantee that women’s active involvement in both peacebuilding efforts receives the necessary backing. It should start with us to harness the vision and talent of women for a more peaceful and prosperous world,” Sheendelwako stated.
She added that the event not only served as a platform for celebration but also as a call to action, encouraging investment in women’s potential across all sectors.
According to Sheendelwako, the Namibian Navy’s commitment to gender equality and the empowerment of women highlights the ongoing efforts to create inclusive environments where women can thrive and contribute to their fullest potential.
