The Minister of Urban and Rural Development, Erastus Uutoni, has urged local authorities across Namibia to embrace the role of champions in fostering local economic development.
While delivering the keynote address at the official opening of the Association of Local Authorities in Namibia (ALAN) LED Indaba in Lüderitz, Uutoni stressed the need for bold vision, practical actions, and compassionate service in this endeavour.
The theme of this year’s Indaba, “Promoting Local Economic Development through Inclusive Strategic Planning, Innovation, and Diversification of Revenue Streams,” underscores the critical importance of proactive measures at the local level to drive economic growth and prosperity.
Uutoni highlighted the strategic significance of Lüderitz as the host location, citing its potential to emerge as a central hub for the burgeoning green hydrogen development.
He emphasized the far-reaching implications of decisions made today on the lives and aspirations of future generations, urging a forward-looking approach to local economic planning.
The ALAN LED Indaba serves as a platform for stakeholders in the local economic sector to engage in discussions and deliberations aimed at shaping the future trajectory of their communities.
Uutoni expressed confidence that this initiative would serve as a catalyst for sustainable economic growth and development within towns and local authorities across the nation.
Recognizing the integral role of local economic development in the broader national agenda, Uutoni highlighted the collaborative efforts between the Commonwealth Local Government Forum (CLGF), his Ministry, and ALAN.
Through a tripartite partnership, efforts are underway to enhance the capacity of local governments in planning and implementing LED initiatives in Namibia.
This includes reinforcing the policy framework and capacity-building initiatives aimed at empowering local authorities.
As the Indaba progresses, stakeholders are expected to engage in robust discussions, exchange best practices, and explore innovative strategies to drive inclusive economic growth at the grassroots level.
The minister urged local authorities to seize the opportunity to shape a future of prosperity for all Namibians through proactive and visionary economic policies and actions.
