Ministry of Environment and Tourism earned N$9.3 million in 2022/2023 in 2022/2023 financial year from gaming and gambling activities.
The ministry plans in the 2024/2025-2026/2027 financial years to secure approval for staff structure and budget in order to operationalize the Gambling Board of Namibia and Lotteries Board of Namibia.
Tourism contribution to national GDP is estimated to reach a total N$46.8 billion during 2024/2025 – 2026/2027 financial years, according to the ministry.
A total number of 1600 of applications for Environmental Clearance Certificates were received, of which 946 Environmental Clearance Certificates were issued for various activities. 150 sites were inspected for environmental compliance and monitoring, and 20 compliance orders for draft regulations for sand Mining.
As part of forest management, 57 spot fines were issued; 157 awareness campaigns; 728 resource inspections were conducted, while 9, 200 forest permits were issued.
The ministry approved the African Wild Dog Conservation Strategy and Action Plan and further executed a variety of activities as part of implementing its black rhino conservation strategy, national elephant conservation and management strategy, national lion conservation strategy and action plan and white rhino conservation strategy.
The ministry plans species management plans for all wetland species and award three tourism and six trophy hunting concessions within protected areas.
Furthermore, the public works plans include renovations, alterations to the ministry’s headquarters, additions and alteration of the sub-divisional office at Omaruru; staff houses at Onjoka and Okatjikona, three staff houses and construction of a new conservancy tank at Von Bach Game Park and office at Outjo; rehabilitation of the 136km Galton Gate to M’Bari tourist road.
The other plans include upgrading of sewerage and water supply systems at Waterberg Plateau Park as well as major sewer repairs at Etosha National Park, reintroduction of game to communal conservation, overhaul and maintenance of helicopter and fixed Wings, game capture equipment, fencing of conversation areas, drilling and water infrastructure installation at Mahango.
