In response to the low rate of Subscriber Identity Module (SIM) card registration at its mobile retail stores nationwide, Mobile Telecommunications Company (MTC) has recruited over 100 Ambassadors.
This initiative, accompanied by extensive outreach efforts in rural, semi-rural, and peri-urban areas, aims to boost registration numbers.
John Ekongo, MTC’s Corporate Communications Manager, mentioned that the company is coordinating daily with regional leadership and utilizing SMS announcements.
These efforts are to inform customers in rural areas about the locations of mobile registration points.
“This strategy is crucial to ensure comprehensive coverage across all regions and to register every MTC SIM card subscriber before the extended deadline of 31 March 2024,” Ekongo stated.
The original deadline was set for 31 December 2023.
Addressing the challenges faced and the general reluctance for early registration, Ekongo attributed this to a tendency towards procrastination.
He urged MTC customers and the public at large to avoid delaying registration.
“It seems to be more about procrastination than anything else. We observed a decline in registrations following the extension announcement. We strongly advise you not to wait until the last minute but to register as soon as possible,” Ekongo advised.
As of now, out of 2.6 million active subscribers, more than 585,000 have yet to register, with only two months remaining until the deadline.
Despite the slow turnout for early registrations, Ekongo remains confident that MTC’s countrywide outreach initiatives will help the company achieve its registration target.
