According to the Namibia Police Force, the country has recorded 57 deaths as a result of road accidents during the festive season.
The latest road traffic crash comparative statistics for the period between 17 November 2023 and 1 January 2024, reveal that the country’s road accident fatalities marked a 14 percent decrease from the previous year’s toll of 66 fatalities.
The report further reveals a five percent surge in overall road crashes and a two percent increase in injuries.
“The latest road traffic crash statistics reveal a 14 percent decrease in fatalities. While this may be a positive development, the overall road safety scenario remains a concern as crashes have increased by 5 percent and injuries by two percent during the period reviewed,” reads the report.
The report further revealed that 403 crashes were recorded in 2023/24 compared to 382 crashes in 2022/23 and that there were 724 injuries recorded in 2023/24 compared to 711 injuries in 2022/23.
Moreover, the police highlighted a pressing need for increased vigilance on the roads, particularly addressing issues like unsafe overtaking and inadequate following distances.
“The primary concern lies in the attitude and behaviour of drivers, with instances of unsafe overtaking and inadequate following distances being prevalent. We urge all road users to prioritise safety and adhere to traffic rules and regulations.
Let’s prioritise responsible and cautious behaviour to ensure the well-being of everyone, as this is a shared responsibility that extends to all road users, including drivers, passengers, pedestrians, cyclists, horse riders and those leading animals,” says the report.
