Lilongwe, Malawi – Minister of Youth, Sport, and National Service, Hon. Agnes Tjongarero, has assumed the esteemed position of Chairperson of the AUSC Region 5 Council of Ministers. This noteworthy appointment was made on December 15, 2023, during the ordinary session of the Region 5 Council of Ministers meeting in Lilongwe, Malawi.
Hon. Tjongarero takes the helm from Hon. Uchizi Mkandawire of Malawi, as stipulated by the rotational policy outlined in Article 30.6 of the Region 5 Constitution. The meeting, was attended by five Ministers and four Deputy Ministers from the ten Region 5 member countries.
As the newly appointed Chairperson, Hon. Tjongarero not only leads the Council of Ministers but also assumes the role of Chairperson of the Troika of Ministers, joined by ministers responsible for sport in Mozambique and Malawi. This strategic leadership position comes with a two-year term, aligning with the constitutional provisions governing the rotation of the Chairpersonship.
The Region 5 Council of Ministers serves as the supreme policy-making body of the organization, with responsibilities ranging from formulating policies and regulations for sports administration to ratifying annual budgets and audited accounts. The Chairperson plays a crucial role in steering the organization, particularly under the recently approved Strategic Plan and HEART28 strategy.
The HEART28 strategy, aptly named the Theory of Change, aims to expedite the industrialization and digitalization of sports, emphasizing sports entrepreneurship as a key revenue generator. The strategic focus includes brand regeneration and vertical integration, signaling a shift in the capital structure towards sustainable productive investment.
Furthermore, the new Chairperson is tasked with ensuring the stability of the organization under the approved organizational re-engineering model, known as 3S+P. This model focuses on revitalizing the pillars of strategy, structure, skills, and programs to ensure the sustainable growth and viability of the AUSC Region 5.
As Hon. Agnes Tjongarero assumes this pivotal role, expectations are high for her to lead the Region 5 Council of Ministers toward a future marked by commercial sustainability, strategic growth, and organizational resilience.
