In the early morning hours of Monday, another heartbreaking incident of gender-based violence (GBV) unfolded at the Okuryangava location in Windhoek’s Katutura, after a 40-year-old man shot his girlfriend before turning the gun on himself.
The man who was identified as David Isai Valungameka, shot his 33-year-old lover and then took his own life. According to Deputy Commissioner Kauna Shikwambi, head of the Public Relations Division of the Namibian Police, the intended murder victim suffered a gunshot wound to the head and was rushed to Katutura State Hospital in a very critical condition.
Shikwambi stated that Valungameka shot himself in the mouth before succumbing to his injuries at the scene. According to Shikwambi, the couple were quarrelling before Valungameka entered the woman’s bedroom in the early hours of Monday.
“It’s alleged that the deceased, who was the victim’s boyfriend, went to the victim’s room at around 04h00, and a disagreement erupted. The victim promptly notified her sister about the threat to her life. Shortly after gunshots were heard coming from the bedroom,” said Shikwambi.
She added that upon breaking down the door to enter the room, family members discovered the bodies of the victim and the assailant lying in a pool of blood on the bed.
The victim, whose identity has been withheld, is currently battling for her life in the Katutura Intermediate State Hospital’s Acute Care Unit.
Meanwhile, the police have also reported over the weekend that Kapule Ndooya killed his girlfriend by slitting her throat at Eenhana in the Ohangwena region on Sunday evening. It is alleged that the violent murder occurred after DNA results revealed that the two children Ndooya was raising were biologically not his.
Commissioner Zacharias Amakali reported that Ndooya was fatally shot by members of the police after he violently attacked them in an effort to resist arrest.
