Who’s Ndinelao?
I’m Ndinaelao Moses, an electrical power engineer by profession. Alongside engineering, I’m dedicated to mentorship and education, guiding aspiring engineers through QueenShono Mentorship. Advocating for mental health awareness and children’s rights is a cause close to my heart, and I have a passion for teaching mathematics and science. Serving as a motivational speaker with NAMWIE, I have the privilege of encouraging high school students to explore the exciting world of STEM, empowering them to reach their full potential.
What inspired the title of your new book?
As the author, I drew inspiration for this story from a deep well of observations and experiences. I couldn’t help but notice how quick we, as a society, can be to judge others, often without understanding their full story or the challenges they face. This tendency to rush to judgment, to write someone off without giving them a fair chance, troubled me deeply.
I also felt a strong urge to be a voice for those who are marginalized or ignored, particularly in a world where injustice can sometimes feel overwhelming. The story became a means to explore these complex issues, to shine a light on the importance of empathy, and to show the resilience of the human spirit in the face of adversity.
So, in essence, the inspiration for “Don’t Write Me Off” springs from a desire to challenge societal norms, question our preconceived notions, and advocate for fairness and compassion in an often unjust world. It’s a story driven by a belief in the power of understanding and the hope that, by telling it, we can encourage others to be more compassionate and open-minded in their own lives.
Are there any specific literary works or authors that you admire and draw inspiration from, either within or outside the realm of non-fiction?
As an author, my literary journey has been deeply influenced by a diverse range of voices. J.K. Rowling’s imaginative brilliance in creating the magical world of Harry Potter has been a profound source of inspiration. Her ability to craft a narrative that transcends age and background is something I aspire to achieve in my work.
Moreover, the powerful narratives of African authors have played a pivotal role in shaping my storytelling. Chinua Achebe’s masterpiece, “Things Fall Apart,” remains a touchstone for its poignant portrayal of cultural change and its enduring impact on generations. It catalyzed my exploration of complex societal shifts in my writing.
Childhood reads like “Meekulu’s Children” by Karin, which delves into the struggles during a critical period of independence, have left an indelible mark. Take us through your journey as an author. What led you to pursue writing, and how has your writing evolved over the years?
My journey as a writer has been a tapestry woven with passion, resilience, and growth. It all began with poetry at the tender age of 14, a spark that ignited my love for storytelling. However, an unfortunate incident led to the loss of my early work. Undeterred, I continued my writing journey in university, penning a story titled ‘Namibia Cinderella,’ although fate dealt another blow when my laptop, containing this work, was stolen.
In 2019, a milestone was achieved with the publication of my inaugural book, ‘Masked Warrior: All at Once.’ This marked a turning point in my writing journey, as I delved deeper into the craft, refining my skills and honing my voice. The following year, 2021, witnessed the release of my second book, ‘Don’t Write Me Off Just Yet Part 1,’ a testament to my unwavering dedication.
A particularly significant milestone came in collaboration with UNICEF, where I had the privilege of contributing a story titled ‘We Are Human, Not Programmed Machines.’ This venture underscored the transformative power of storytelling and its potential to impact wider audiences.
This year, on August 4th, I celebrated the official launch of all my books, culminating in the release of the eagerly anticipated second part of the ‘Don’t Write Me Off Just Yet’ series. This event marked a moment of immense pride and a realization of how far I’ve come.
Throughout this journey, my grammar, vocabulary, and comprehension of literary principles have markedly improved. The process of writing and publishing has been a school of continual learning, shaping me into the author I am today. Each creation, from poems to novels, stands as a testament to my growth, not just as a writer, but as a storyteller who strives to touch hearts and minds.
The path of a writer is a perpetual evolution, and as I gaze towards the horizon, I do so with gratitude for the past and an eagerness for the stories that await, knowing that the journey has only just begun.
How does your educational background contribute to these books?
As an electrical power engineer, my education in one of the toughest fields globally has greatly influenced my writing. The discipline and hard work required in engineering, which often led to many sleepless nights, have become integral to how I approach storytelling. This background instils in me, a careful attention to detail and a step-by-step method of problem-solving, which I apply to crafting well-structured narratives. Additionally, my engineering education fosters a logical way of thinking that allows me to create stories with intricate plots and engaging characters. It also gives me a unique perspective on how technology, society, and human behavior interact in my writing. When did you realize that you have a story to share with the world?
I realized at a young age that I had a story to share with the world. There was this inner calling to make a difference through my writing, a feeling that urged me to help people in some way. It struck me every time I witnessed something considered normal, yet deep down, I knew it was far from right. It stirred a burning desire within me to step forward, take the stage, and shout to the world, to stand up for what’s just and become the voice for those who couldn’t speak up. I even contemplated becoming a singer, despite lacking the vocal talent, just to convey my message to the world. For me, storytelling is a means of healing, a way to guide people in discovering themselves and understanding the intricate realm of mental health, recognizing its profound impact on individuals. This drive to share stories, to bring about positive change, has been a driving force throughout my writing journey.
What challenges did you encounter putting these books together?
Creating these books was tough. I had a full-time job and other responsibilities like relationships to manage, so finding time to write was a puzzle. Writer’s block was another hurdle. There were moments when the right words just wouldn’t come, and the story seemed stuck. But even when it was frustrating, I pushed through. It showed me how determined I am to see this through.
Looking back, these challenges were important. They not only shaped the books but also helped me grow as a writer. I learned how to manage my time better and how to keep going even when things get tough. Every problem I faced ended up making the final books stronger. This whole process has been a big learning experience for me.
As an author, how important are book reviews, and what have you learned from the reviews?
As an author, book reviews hold immense significance. They serve as a direct connection to my readers, offering valuable insights into how my work is perceived and received. From reviews, I’ve learned about the aspects of my writing that resonate most strongly with readers, as well as areas that may benefit from further refinement. Constructive criticism from reviews has been instrumental in my growth as a writer, helping me hone my storytelling skills and understand the preferences of my audience. Additionally, positive reviews provide affirmation and motivation to continue writing, while negative reviews, though sometimes challenging, offer opportunities for reflection and improvement.
