The Ministry of International Relations and Cooperation is calling on Namibians to remain calm while South African law enforcement investigates the incident in which a Namibian citizen lost both his eyes during an alleged attack in Johannesburg South Africa last week.
Sabine Böhlke-Möller, Acting Executive Director in the Ministry, stressed the importance of allowing authorities to conduct a thorough investigation to bring the culprits to justice.
“The Ministry of International Relations and Cooperation wishes to call for calm and understanding from the public while the investigation into this unfortunate incident is ongoing,” stated Böhlke-Möller.
Böhlke-Möller said the Namibian Mission, in coordination with South African authorities, is dedicated to uncovering the truth behind the crime.
“The Namibian Mission has made contact with the victim, who has since returned home to Namibia, and is receiving treatment at the Central Hospital in Windhoek,” she said.”
This comes after a 37-year-old Namibian man faced an ordeal in Johannesburg, South Africa, where he was allegedly robbed, abducted, and tragically subjected to a surgical removal of his eyes.
According to local media reports, Sam Shikongo, a Lüderitz resident engaged in the business of buying and selling items, has since returned to Namibia, where he is currently receiving medical treatment and support at a local hospital.
Providing an account of the events leading up to the attack, Shikongo described an attempt to negotiate a deal, resulting in a planned assault by a group of assailants.
The motives behind this gruesome act remain unclear, with Shikongo suggesting possible involvement in ritualistic crime.
