Michael Amushelelo’s lawyer Kadhila Amoomo, has expressed frustration and disappointment in the Namibian Police Force after they took his client to the wrong court yesterday.
Amoomo said the police have frustrated him for not making sure his client attended court on time, which resulted in his client’s case being postponed to 11 October 2023.
“The police are just frustrating us, and wasting our time to go to court. This is not right. We will fight for the release of our client no matter how the police try to make it hard for him,” he stated.
He noted that the police were not doing this for the first time, and it is a clear indication of delay tactics to keep his client behind bars for a long period.
Amushelelo was scheduled to appear in the Windhoek Magistrate yesterday for his ongoing trial.
“Last time, they brought him late to court, and now they took him to the wrong court. They have also done it on different occasions,” lamented Amoomo.
He expressed his concern about the way the police are doing its work towards Amushelelo.
“The police should make sure my client attends the right Court and they should bring him on time,” said Amoomo.
Meanwhile, Amushelelo’s wife, Julieta Amushelelo has also expressed concern over the police’s actions towards her husband.
“My husband was supposed to appear in court today to continue with his trial the police failed to bring him to court which resulted in his trial being postponed,” she said.
She claimed the state, through the police is doing everything in its power to make sure her husband remains in detention.
She said the police’s failure to bring her husband to court was a violation of his rights.
“This is not the first time that they fail to bring him to court, every time he needs to appear in court the police always try to make sure that he does not make it,” she noted.
She indicated that most of the time, her husband has been in solitary confinement.
“I am deeply hurt to see him go through all of this and my heart breaks every day not having him home. But I believe that my tears will not be in vain,” she expressed
Amushelelo was arrested on 21 March 2023, along with Dimbulukweni Nauyoma and Popular Democratic Movement Member of Parliament, Inna Hengari, for allegedly organizing a national protest against youth unemployment, and he has been in custody ever since while his compatriots were granted bail of N$5 000 each.
Recently Police Chief, Joseph Shikongo, was quoted in local media saying that it is not the police that is keeping Amushelelo in jail but the justice system which is doing its work.
