Professor Peter Katjavivi, Speaker of the National Assembly, was accorded an Honorary Fellowship by Cardiff University on Monday, an accolade he dedicated to his late wife Rosemary Jane Katjavivi, who was born in the United Kingdom.
Jane passed away in his presence in August of last year on a flight to Windhoek.
She was an accomplished author, editor, and former publisher with a background in African studies. She was born in Britain and passed away at the age of 70.
“I dedicate this prestigious honour to my late wife, a pillar of unwavering support in my journey. Our work towards nation-building was a shared passion,” Katjavivi said during his acceptance speech.
The award was presented at a ceremony held this week on Monday.
The university, which is renowned throughout the world for its emphasis on inclusivity and excellence in higher education, gives these unique honours to a select number of people each year whose notable accomplishments and contributions have had a long-lasting influence on society.
Katjavivi has served in multiple roles, including as Ambassador in Belgium and Germany, Director General of the National Planning Commission, Member of Parliament, Government Chief Whip, and now Speaker of the National Assembly and Vice President of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) Task Force on the Russia-Ukraine conflict.
Katjavivi also provided insight into the significant collaboration between Cardiff University and the University of Namibia that dates back to the 1990s.
Important academic programs and research initiatives between Namibia and the United Kingdom have been made possible as a result of this collaboration, which has had a significant positive impact on Namibia’s development agenda.
In addition, emphasized the necessity of strengthening ties between the Senedd (Welsh Parliament) and the Namibian Parliament, especially in light of complex global challenges such as climate change.
“As we face complex global challenges like climate change and strive towards zero emissions, our cooperation will be crucial. I am thrilled to use this honour to further our combined efforts and continue our work for a sustainable and inclusive world,” he expressed.
Professor Rudolf Allemann, Pro Vice-Chancellor, International and Student Recruitment of Cardiff University, delivered a compelling oration celebrating Katjavivi’s dedication to social justice and higher education.
“Peter has devoted his life to the cause of social justice. From building international support for Namibia’s liberation struggle to transforming a previously segregated academic institution into a national university accessible to all Namibians, his tireless efforts have had an indelible impact,” said Allemann.
